Savannah Airport food court design captures local spirit

Published: 04-Feb-2011

Florida-based Schmidt Design Studio along with Greensboro architecture firm Kippels & Associates, have designed a food court at Savannah Airport in Georgia, US capturing the feel of historic Savannah.

The design team has transformed the dated joint into a warm and inviting place. The team was appointed by HMSHost to lead the design efforts. The airport pit stop was in a bland state with old seating, outdated floor and lighting, and mix-matched counters. Cleaning the lines and updating the colours was the first step of the transformation. The makeover began with incorporating modern signage. The previous mix-matched counter faces of Pino Gelato, Pizza Hut and Nathan’s were removed and replaced with newly-finished counter designs.

A notable element of the design is its rich Savannah feel. Classic lines, rich gold colours, art pieces from the local Savannah College of Art and Design, and interesting patterns on the floor were incorporated to achieve it.

The colors were freshened with earth tones of deep gold, natural stone look countertops and tabletops, and white painted moldings to accentuate the architecture. The old ceiling fans and outdated lighting were removed and replaced with smaller and new recessed fixtures and glass lantern wall sconces. Fresh, light porcelain tiles were chosen for the floor with a secondary colour pattern mixed throughout.

Artwork was the most important part with about ten pieces collected from the Savannah College of Art and Design. These new pieces were chosen based on their southern feel elements and include towering moss filled trees and images of the past. Six additional pieces were collected through a Florida gallery designed by an artist, adding vibrant landscapes capturing the region.

The food court is located at pre-security atrium in the main terminal of Savannah airport.
