Spencer Dock Bridge in Dublin wins International Architecture Award 2010
Published: 15-Jul-2010
The Spencer Dock Bridge in Dublin, Ireland, has scooped the International Architecture Award 2010 from the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design, and the European Center for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.
Designed by London-based practice Amanda Levete Architects, the $6.8 million bridge spanning 40m has been designed to resemble a manta ray. The underside of the bridge merges with the piers in a single movement. The joint lines in the concrete accentuate the geometry of the form. The white finish of the concrete offers high visibility against the dark water of the canal. During night, the bridge will be illuminated from below giving it a significant presence.
According to the architects, the main design objective was to create a sculptural work that would integrate the surrounding infrastructure with Linear Park, which is designed by the French landscape architecture firm Agence Ter. Some civic aspects are also incorporated into the design such as the bridge’s viewing decks that are designed to offer potential meeting places for pedestrians.
The center points of the north and south sides of the bridge stoop out at about 16 feet. This helps in forming cantilevered decks over the water, offering pedestrians views up and down the canal. The bridge is constructed using a combination of white insitu and precast reinforced concrete. All formwork has been milled directly from 3D parametric models. This innovative use of Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) cut polystyrene is considered as the largest application of the material to be used till date.
The Spencer Dock Bridge forms the centerpiece of the new extension to the light rail line in Dublin City Centre and part of a larger regeneration project for the inner city and former docks. Amanda Levete Architects worked in association with architectural and design practice Future Systems on the Spencer Dock Bridge scheme.
The first project to be completed under the name of Amanda Levete Architects, Spencer Dock Bridge was previously awarded the Best Structural Design 2009 at the Leaf Awards.
The International Architecture Awards recognize the world's most important new buildings, landscape architecture and urban planning projects. The 2010 awards received over 2,000 entries from over 45 countries around the world and 95 new buildings and urban planning projects were selected in the 2010 awards from 38 nations.
