Sterling / Scott Yacht Design reveals design details of helicopter support yacht concept
Published: 18-Aug-2010
Monaco-based yacht design firm Sterling / Scott Yacht Design has released details of their new helicopter support yacht concept, named ‘Independence’.
The new 58 metre helicopter support vessel has been designed by Sterling / Scott Yacht Design in collaboration with Sky Group/Monacair, operator of yacht based helicopters, and Edmiston, a firm that deals with super and megayacht sales, charters and management.
The new Independence yacht will be equipped with a fully operational aviation standard Heli hangar. The yacht has been designed specifically for the purpose of carrying a large helicopter together with all the other tenders and toys to support a mother ship. It will also be capable of offering high-tech maintenance facilities for an Augusta Grande 109 helicopter. It will also feature significant extra storage and tankage capacity.
Independence will feature 133 square metre helipad and plenty of space for tenders and toys. Besides all these, it will feature pool, gym deck and fold-down transom to give direct access to the water and a dedicated dive centre. Operated by up to 14 crew members, this support vessel is designed to give accommodation for up to 20 additional on-call staff from the mother ship.
Independence is engineered to reach speeds of up to 18 knots and an economical transatlantic range of 14 knots with its two main engines combined with controllable pitch propellers. Sterling / Scott has shaped the hull in such a way that comfort and economy are ensured. The X-shaped bow will reduce resistance and pitching accelerations.
