Treehotel – unique hotel perched on trees to open in Sweden

Published: 12-Jul-2010

Treehotel, a unique new hotel which has transformed the simple treehouse concept from childhood into a destination for design conscious travelers, will be unveiled in Harads, Northern Sweden, on July 17, 2010.

The inspiration for the Treehotel project was borrowed from a documentary film that followed three urban friends who came out to Harads and built a treehouse. That treehouse has been used as a rental unit over the last year and ultimately inspired hotel developers to develop this project.

The Treehotel in Harads will initially consist of only six rental units, each with its own theme including the Cabin, Mirror House, UFO, Marge uppe bland trädkronorna, Triangle, and the Birds Nest. Each rental unit will be 50-100 square feet and will be located 13-19 feet above the ground. All units will be built around one or more pine trees, with each unit containing separate sleeping and living areas, an eco-friendly incineration based toilet, and a water-efficient sink. Out of the initial six units, four will be double rooms and two will house four beds. Each of the rooms will contain an electric floor heating system to provide extra warmth. Access to each unit will be either through a ramp or sturdy stairs with two units having electric retractable stairs.

The Treehotel will also include a sauna, a conference room and a breakfast room which will seat 12 guests. The hotel will also be the first Tree Hotel in the world with a sauna. A briefing room with disabled access and facilities will also be featured.

The Cabin, the Blue Cone, the Nest and the Mirrorcube rooms will be unveiled on July 17, 2010. Two additional structures namely the UFO and A Room With a View, are scheduled to open in October 2010. The Mirrorcube room has drawn the most attention being attached to a single tree. It is designed to be invisible within the forest. Four meters high and four meters wide, the walls of the room are made with mirrored glass to reflect the surrounding views with the trees, the clouds and the sun. A special film will be applied to the glass, which will be visible to birds to prevent them from flying into the structure and to minimize Treehotel's impact on wildlife.

Five different architects designed all the six rooms. The Treehotel will expand with an additional 18 units to be designed and built over the next five years. It is located about 60 km south of the Arctic Circle in Sweden.
