UCO’s Forensic Science Institute becomes first LEED-certified college in Oklahoma
Published: 25-Aug-2010
University of Central Oklahoma's (UCO) Forensic Science Institute has received Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) certification, making it the first university building to receive the award in Oklahoma, US.
The 35,000 square feet Forensic Science Institute building incorporated a host of sustainable measures and was commended by the US Green Building Council for its construction waste management, recycled content, use of regional and low-emitting building materials and water-use reduction.
More than 13% of the building materials of the Forensic Science Institute building were manufactured using recycled materials with the construction reducing water use by up to 36%. About 94% of on-site construction waste was diverted from a landfill. More than 22% of the building materials used was extracted, harvested, recovered or manufactured within 500 miles of the project and nearly 60% of the wood-based building materials came from Forest Stewardship Council-certified forests.
The Forensic Science Institute building was also commended for providing access to alternative transportation like bus routes, and featuring bicycle racks and three preferred parking spaces for low-emitting fuel-efficient vehicles.
The university's Architectural and Engineering Services office worked closely with Frankfurt-based Short Bruza Architects and Timberlake Construction throughout the design and construction process to meet LEED standards.
UCO is also the only university in Oklahoma, which is named a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Green Power Partner, for its purchase of 100% wind power.
