University of Cincinnati plans stadium expansion
Published: 02-Sep-2009
The University of Cincinnati, Ohio, is planning to increase the seating in the Nippert Stadium, college football’s fifth-oldest facility in the US.
The university has hired US-based design consultancy CSL International to finalize the right number of premium seating that can be added to the stadium, while US-based architectural firm HNTB has been hired to design the improvements.
A study will be performed for the complete renovation of the stadium. The Nippert stadium displays a shoe horn design, and is located in the middle of the campus; it is open for students to walk through its premises to reach their respective classes.
The expansion of the stadium will be guided by its location, which is very compact and should be expanded without encroaching the neighborhood. Nippert Stadium currently features 35,000 seats and a permanent grandstand behind the north end zone. The architects feel that the stadium can expand to include an estimated 10,000 seats including the premium levels.
The stadium has one suite for the university and club lounge with space for 200 people reserved for the George D. Smith Society members. The price of the new suites will be determined by CSL officials, which will be integrated into HNTB’s overall plan for stadium upgrades.
Study for the stadium expansion is slated to be complete in mid-October, while HNTB is expected to complete the design by end of 2009.
