UPenn's Rare Book & Manuscript Library completes phase I upgrades

Published: 23-Dec-2011

The Rare Book & Manuscript Library in the University of Pennsylvania, US has completed phase I of a multi-year makeover.

The facility, situated on the sixth storey of the Van Pelt-Dietrich Library, will be converted into a special collections centre following the facelift. The first phase involved creation of a new reading room with its designs optimising natural light penetration. There has also been creation of a new reading and study terrace as part of the phase. The area overlooks Locust Walk while offering views of College Green. Others features of this phase include construction of a new study alcove to facilitate group study sessions, as well as a new mixed-use lecture and event area in the middle of the sixth floor.

The second phase of the project includes creation of a new unit to house the Shakespeare collection, three new seminar rooms and an advanced media lab, and a second terrace seating space allowing glimpses of the Centre City skyline. The final phase will involve construction of a new stack area for the rare book collection of the library on the building's fifth level. The project is slated to be fully completed by the end of 2012.
