The $15 million Buhler Centre was designed by Winnipeg-based David Penner Architect and Peter Sampson Architecture Studio Inc. in conjunction with DIN Projects. The first piece of art to be installed in the space, ‘Pole to mark the centre of the world’ by artist Jimmie Durham was also unveiled at the function.

The LEED Silver-certified Buhler Centre with 50,000 square feet of space is designed to be the new home to UWinnipeg's Faculty of Business and Economics and its Division of Continuing Education as well as Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art. The facility blends art, education and business at one of Winnipeg's most important intersections. The Buhler Centre features a state-of-the-art business environment with new SMART classrooms housed in a building filled with natural light.

The new Institute in the Buhler Centre will support Plug In ICA’s efforts to increase its visibility and accessibility, besides offering new and engaging social and learning activities to multiple communities. The facility will more than double Plug In ICA's current exhibition space. The design of the facility meets international museum standards to enable Plug In ICA to introduce international works previously not seen in Winnipeg.

Built on the site of the old United Army Surplus Sales store and adjacent to the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the Buhler Centre is designed with an open portal at grade that allows pedestrians to cut through the building alongside the galleries.

The interior colour scheme of the centre was designed by Winnipeg- and Berlin-based artist Rodney LaTourelle in collaboration with the design team. The reflective tabs on the building's façade are designed to capture the activity of the city. The façade also helps in reflecting shifts of light that are particular to the Prairies. The light effect acts as veil over the building's exterior cladding comprised of insulated metal panels and resembles snow crystals in summer.

The Buhler Centre has been made possible because of an historic $4 million dollar gift to UWinnipeg by Winnipeg business icons and philanthropists Bonnie and John Buhler.

The Buhler Centre project was managed by the University of Winnipeg Community Renewal Corporation (UWCRC) and was completed on time and within budget. UWinnipeg faculty and staff will begin moving into the Buhler Centre by late 2010 and about 5,000 students are expected to attend courses in the Buhler Centre.
