Vo Trong Nghia designs domed bamboo café in Vietnam

Published: 09-Dec-2010

Vo Trong Nghia, an architect who is known as a bamboo building maestro, has designed a domed sustainable café called Water and Wind Cafe in Vietnam, crafted entirely from bamboo and other natural materials.

One of the unique features of the new café building is that every bit of bamboo in the design was woven together using traditional Vietnamese weaving techniques, and is completely built without a single nail. This unique construction method displays the versatility and strength of bamboo, which is a rapid-growing renewable material.

The Water and Wind Cafe’s 30ft-high bamboo frame is covered in a local bush plant. The top part of the dome features an opening incorporated to allow abundant natural light into the interiors.

Though he studied architecture in Japan, Nghia’s arly life in a small village in central Vietnam proved the ideal and natural foundation for his unique architectural projects.
