Western Kings Arena raising funds for phase-two facility renovation

Published: 18-Feb-2013

The Western Kings Arena in Kingston, Canada is raising funds from the public and the provincial government to facilitate phase two upgrades at the Kingston rink.

In September 2012, the Western Kings Arena Association has closed ice surface due to equipment failure. Since then, the arena executive is planning on a two-phase repair and renovation project to bring the facility back to working order.

Under the phase one, 60,000 feet of coolant piping on the floor was leveled using sand to create a base for the ice surface. Phase two will include the construction of a brand new cement floor, along with new glass, boards and safety netting.

Work is also underway for a granite stone wall plaque fundraiser which will be located in the arena’s upstairs warm room on a wall dedicated to friends of the Kingston Arena.

Wayne Fowler, president of the Western Kings Arena Association commented that a sum of about $10,000 has been roughly committed to their portion of the repairs. There is also a $22,453.59 surplus from the county’s contribution of $150,000 to the first phase of the project. But the Kings County council is not expected to decide the fate of surplus funds from the Western Kings Arena project until March 2013.
