WHO's Amman headquarters bags LEED Gold

Published: 24-Jan-2012

The new Amman headquarters of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Jordan has received LEED Gold certification.

The facility, designed by Amman-based firm Engicon, is the first in Amman and Jordan to secure the certification. It spans over an area of 3900 square metres while encompassing four floors. The structure accommodates WHO, and the Regional Centre for Environmental Health Activities and comprises common reception areas, meeting rooms and a library apart from video conference rooms.

The building imbibes several green features. The design of the building optimises natural light penetration throughout, which in turn reaps energy cost cuts. The location of the offices allows maximum utilisation of pre-existing infrastructure. Further, nearly half of the materials used during the construction process have been procured from regional or local sources. Diversion of 78% of construction debris from reaching landfills adds to the sustainability.
